Cardinal Burke in front of Planned Parenthood

May 11, 2011

I attended Mass and a prayer vigil in front of Planned Parenthood with Cardinal Burke presiding (he flew all the way from Rome!) last Monday. In his homily, he cited Saint Stephen as a witness to absolute truth, who remained steadfast with “ the face of an angel” (cf. Acts 6:15) as false accusations were hurled against him for blasphemy against Moses and God (cf. Acts 6:11). Saint Stephen looked “up steadfastly to heaven, saw the glory of God and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. And he said: Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.” (cf. Acts 7:55). His accusers, denying the truth he spoke, covered their ears, and stoned Saint Stephen to death with the help of Saul.

Cardinal Burke gave encouragement that as followers of Christ, we are to defend human dignity and protection

of all life from conception to death. Just as the Holy Spirit helped Saint Stephen speak the truth towards his accusers, the Holy Spirit will act as our advocate, giving us the courage and wisdom to do the same. He pointed out that Saul persecuted thousands of Christians but later converted to Christianity. In our day, there are people who cover their ears from the truth (cf. Acts 7:58), closing their eyes from the objective reality that abortion takes human life.

However, as we witness to the gospel of life and with the guidance and prayers of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the unborn and the Americas, Cardinal Burke reminds us that people, just like Saul, are converted.

I hope Cardinal Burke will post his homily online for all to read, since my summary cannot do His Eminence justice! He spoke with a strong yet humble voice, speaking patiently from the heart as if to each one of us. He almost sounds like Pope Benedict XVI, a gentle yet firm grandfather, but without the German accent.

I was delighted to see the young crowd from toddlers, to elementary, high school up to college level, attend the Mass and vigil prayer. The pro-life movement is truly cross-generational which speaks volumes. We also had the Knights of Columbus, religious orders, and I think 6 priests, including 2 deacons and a rabbi. We all walked from the church to Planned Parenthood while Cardinal Burke led the prayers of the Divine Mercy and then rosary of the Joyful Mysteries. It was beautiful heading toward the death mill,  where the answer is “no” to life, we meditated and prayed upon the annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she said “yes” to be the mother of God; she firmly said “yes” to life!

Planned Parenthood; the largest abortion facility in the United States, over 76,000 square feet

It took approximately 16 minutes to reach Planned Parenthood — the largest abortion clinic in the nation with over 76,000 square feet – as we were greeted by police stationed in every corner. Since this was my first time ever taking part in a pro-life vigil in front of an abortion clinic, my heart was bounding in excitement. I was surprised there weren’t any pro-choice protesters as we arrived. But as my gaze switched to the mammoth building of death, I could see silhouettes of people next to various windows taping poster size “I stand with Planned Parenthood” signs. I suddenly felt sad. A lady next to me raised her rosary and said, “Jesus, sanctify this building and its people,” and together we exclaimed “Amen!”

All of us were either standing on the sidewalks or one-fourth away from the curbs. We couldn’t stand on the grass or in the drive-way leading into the facility since it is considered private property.

Cardinal Burke leading prayer

Cardinal Burke stepped onto a platform and led us once again through the Divine Mercy and Joyful Mysteries. At one point, tears started pouring down my face when he started the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I thought of the senseless deaths happening right behind us and will continue to do so until hearts and minds are changed. I thought of Jesus Christ’s suffering for us as we take His sacrifice for granted.

Afterwards, Cardinal Burke blessed a new Crisis Pregnancy Mobile which provides free pregnancy exams and ultrasounds. It’s pretty impressive since an ultrasound can change a mother’s heart whether or not to have an abortion as she can physically see her baby.

Michael Voris of RealCatholicTV was at the vigil and did an excellent job recording. I saw him running around with his camera crew and I kept looking at him, telling myself, that’s Michael Voris, no it isn’t, yes it is! Please share:
